Camelback Backpacking Joshua Tree March 20th

For those of you who were not at the Troop meeting on Monday, I distributed the attached Announcement for Part 1 of the Camelback outing to Joshua Tree on March 20-21. This is the first half of two outings (second on April 24-25) that willl earn participants the Camelback Medal.
Signups will be next Monday, Feb 22nd and Permission Slips will also be distributed at that time.  I have attached the Slip for your convenience.

Please note that this outing falls on the same weekend as the Firestone Rifle Shooting activity that Mr. Weaver announced a couple of weeks ago.  Unfortunately, with the large and growing troop, packed Calendar, and needing to take advantage of cooler temps in the desert, the conflict could not be avoided so Scouts will need to choose which (if any) they wish to attend.

Important Boy Scout Leader Training Dates

Boy Scout Leader training is just around the corner in the month of March so mark your calendars!
It is very important that a troop our size maintains qualified, experienced and trained adult leadership in all areas and levels of Scouting. The foundation and core training for Boy Scout Leaders (and interested adults) comes in four parts; New Leader Essentials, Basic Leader Training,  Outdoor Leader Training and Youth Protection.

New Leader Essentials (recently renamed “This is Scouting”) is offered on Wednesday March 17th at First United Methodist Church from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

Basic Leader Training is offered on Saturday March 20th also at First United Methodist Church from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Outdoor Leader Training is offered Firestone Scout Reservation on Friday March 26th at 6:00 pm through Sunday March 28th ending at 2:30 pm.

Youth Protection is also a mandatory class for all adults and trained leaders planning on working with the boys. The next Youth Protection class is coming up on on Wednesday April 21st at First United Methodist Church from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm.

Please go to the following link for more information and registration forms. http://www.riohondobsa.com/TrainingM.htm

If the two Wednesdays do not work for you there is also the option of doing Online Training for Youth Protection and This is Scouting (New Leader Essentials). Please go to http://olc.scouting.org/ for more information.

Please note: These training events are for all adults interested in working with the Scouts and interested in attending or helping out with outings. It’s not just for leaders.  The classes only come around twice a year, Spring and Fall, so don’t miss out.  Also keep in mind that New Leader essentials is the pre-requisite for Basic Leader Training and Basic Leader Training is the pre-requisite for Outdoor Leader Training, so they really need to be taken in the order that they are offered above.

The Troop, our boys, and myself thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to complete this very important training. So come out, hone your Scout skills, better yourself, become a better role model for the boys and have fun while doing it!

Thank you again and happy Scouting!

Mr. Masters,  Asst. Scoutmaster Troop 54

Backpack Tents

From S. Jenkins
Hi:
I will be bringing all 13 of the Troop 54 Sports Authority backpack tents for the Scouts in the event that it is too cold for them to sleep under the tarps. However, the adults will have to bring their own.

I still have three of the Sports Authority backpack tents available for $25 if any of the adults needs a tent to sleep in. If not, I will open it up to the full Troop.

Monday Website Training

On Monday, Jan. 25, there will be a website training for the scouts and any adults who missed the presentation at the parents meeting. After the training, you will know how to be a user, upload pictures and videos, and many more.

High Adventure Training (HAT)

From S. Jenkins –
Per the attached notice, High Adventure Training (HAT) is only offered once per year.  The deadline for enrollment is Feb 12th, and the training will be at Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro on Friday, Feb 19 to Sunday, Feb 21.  Without more trained backpack leaders, we may need to limit the number of Scouts who go on some of our planned outings. Which we hope we won’t have to do. Currently we have 3 dads (Mr. Neel, Mr. Espinoza & Mr. Vermilye) who have committed to attend the HAT training.

As an example, the outings to San Bernardino Peak, San Jacinto and San Gorgonio will all have Wilderness Permit limits of 12 persons per Group (we will hike with 8 Scouts and 4 Adults per Group per Tahquitz Peak outing last Sept).  It is likely that we may have at least 2 Groups and possible 3 for each outing and, therefore, will need more trained adults.

I hope that we can find 4-6 of the Intermediate or older Scout parents to attend this training, and 2-3 of the Beginner or younger Scout parents as well.  Whether you actually plan and lead an outing is less important than having the training to do so.

Similarly, our 2009 outings were organized by Patrol, and Scouts were given the opportunity to begin assuming responsibilities for conducting the outings (Patrol Leader and other Positions, as well as training and expectations).  For 2010, it is hoped that the Scouts who activity participated in 2009 will want to take on more proactive responsibility for planning as well as conducting our 2010 outings.  Therefore, I encourage all those who are at least 13 and First Class to enroll and attend the attached High Adventure Jr. Leader Backpack training.  Again, this is only offered once per year and has already been calendared on the Troop 54 Calendar. The date is March 27-28.

PARENTS & SCOUTS, Please consider taking one of the training classes! Thank you!
If you have any questions regarding the HAT training, email Mr. Jenkins.
